The Theory of Physical Education and Recreation Department (former, the Theory and Methods of Physical Education Department) was founded in 1971. In 1990 it was renamed into the Theoretical Foundations of Physical Education Department. In 2006, two departments were founded on its basis namely the Theory and Methods of Physical Education Department and Mass Sports and Tourism Work Department. In 2015, the Theory of Physical Education, Fitness and Recreation Department was created on the basis of three departments such as Theory and Methods of Physical Education, Sports Games, Fitness and Recreation. The next reorganization took place in 2020 when three departments were created based on two departments of the faculty namely the Theory of Physical Education, Fitness and Recreation Department and the Sports, Mass and Tourism Work Department, among them the Theory of Physical Education and Recreation Department. Over the years of its existence, the Heads of the department were: Ph. D. in Biology, Associate Professor Ovcharenko T.G.; Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Full Professor Prystupa E.N. (1997-1998); Ph. D. in Pedagogy, Associate Professor Yalovyk V.T. (1998-2006); Doctor in Science of Physical Education and Sports, Full Professor Tsos A.V. (2006-2015).
