Historical information

The Theory of Physical Education and Recreation Department (former, the Theory and Methods of Physical Education Department) was founded in 1971. In 1990 it was renamed into the Theoretical Foundations of Physical Education Department. In 2006, two departments were founded on its basis namely the Theory and Methods of Physical Education Department and Mass Sports and Tourism Work Department. In 2015, the Theory of Physical Education, Fitness and Recreation Department was created on the basis of three departments such as Theory and Methods of Physical Education, Sports Games, Fitness and Recreation. The next reorganization took place in 2020 when three departments were created based on two departments of the faculty namely the Theory of Physical Education, Fitness and Recreation Department and the Sports, Mass and Tourism Work Department, among them the Theory of Physical Education and Recreation Department. Over the years of its existence, the Heads of the department were: Ph. D. in Biology, Associate Professor Ovcharenko T.G.; Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Full Professor Prystupa E.N. (1997-1998); Ph. D. in Pedagogy, Associate Professor Yalovyk V.T. (1998-2006); Doctor in Science of Physical Education and Sports, Full Professor Tsos A.V. (2006-2015). Since 2015, the Head of the department is Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Full Professor Belikova Natalia Oleksandrivna.

Training of higher education students

The department provides training for students of higher education in the Specialty 014 Secondary Education (Physical Culture) in the field of knowledge 01 Education / Pedagogy:

• the first (Bachelor) level: Educational and Professional Program Secondary Education. Physical Culture;

• the second (Master) level: Educational and Professional Program Physical Culture;

• academic research degree (Doctor of Philosophy): Educational and Scientific Program Theory and Methodology of Physical Culture Training.


The graduate can hold the following positions

The training of specialists is aimed at the formation of general and special (professional) competencies for teachers of physical education in general secondary education institutions.

The graduates can hold the primary positions (in accordance with classifier DK 003:2010):

• 2310.2 Higher education institution instructor;

• 2320 Pre-tertiary education institution instructor;

• 2331 General secondary school teacher;

• 2359.2 Sports section head.

DOUBLE DIPLOMA PROGRAM

The department, together with the Jan Dlugosz University of Natural Sciences and Humanities in Częstochowa (Poland) implements the Double Diploma Program. Under the program, the future teachers of physical education have the opportunity to simultaneously receive two professional diplomas of higher education Ukrainian and Polish one. Currently, the students of the Bachelor and Master degree in the specialty 014 Secondary Education (Physical Culture) study under this program.

Research Work

The department research activity is carried out within the framework of the continuation of the scientific topic The Influence of Physical Activity on the Quality of Various Population Groups Life (0119U001191) (supervisor – Full Professor Tsyos A.V.). The research is done within the framework of the following topics Scientific and Methodological Foundations of the Health-forming Technologies Development in the Physical Culture of Various Age Groups (supervisor – Full Professor Belikova N.O.). The next one is Theoretical and Methodological Foundations of Physical Activity Development of Various Population Groups (supervisor – Full Professor Tsyos A.V.) in accordance with the consolidated plan of research work in the field of physical culture and sports for 2016-2020.

Research interest are the following design and implementation of health-preserving activities for both secondary and high youth as well as people of working age, aimed at forming a culture of health, ensuring physical and intellectual capacity, improving the quality of life and extending active longevity.

The department is a co-organizer of the annual International Scientific and Practical Conference Physical Activity and Quality of Human Life (with the support of the Section on Physical Culture and Sports of the Higher Education Department of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine). It holds the annual international scientific congress of physical culture historians History of Physical Culture and Sports of Europe Peoples.

Postgraduate Education

Improving the teaching staff qualifications of educational institutions and unities under the second (subsequent) higher education program in the Specialty 014 Secondary Education (Physical Culture) in the field of postgraduate education for persons with higher education.

It is aimed at specialists of the first (Bachelor), second (Master) educational levels, training programs Bachelor, Specialist, Master: the teachers of physical culture of the general secondary education institution and pedagogical workers of other educational institutions and entities.

After completing the courses the students receive a certificate of advanced training for passing the certification of teaching staff of general secondary education institutions in accordance with the Procedure for Advanced Training of Pedagogical and Scientific-Pedagogical Employees, approved by Resolution No. 800 of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated 21 August 2019 (as amended from 27 December 2019).
